The Kerala High Court has disposed of the petition by Kerala State United Nurses Association challenging the appointment of allegedly unqualified personnel in place of registered nurses by Jubilee Mission Hospital and Amala Institute of Medical Science. The staff nurses had gone on strike in March, demanding fair wages.
Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas was informed that the petitioners have reached a settlement with Amala Institute and conciliation talks were ongoing with Jubilee Mission. Subsequently the strike was called off, and the petitioners moved to withdraw the petition before the court.
In its petition, the association contended that the appointments violated the provisions of the Kerala Nurses and Midwives Act, 1953, and the Kerala Clinical Establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act. The Labour
department had mediated talks between the parties concerned, ending the 113 day agitation that had disrupted services at the institutions and grabbed public attention to the nurses’ demand for higher wages.
