CPI(M) to hold extended State committee meeting in Kozhikode to revitalise itself

A three-day extended State committee meeting of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] will be held in Kozhikode in September to strengthen the party by reinforcing its organisational and ideological moorings, its State secretary M.V. Govindan said here on Friday. Through the meeting, scheduled from September 13 to 15, the CPI(M) aims at “effective interventions” for a “top-to-bottom” transformation by strengthening the party’s connect with the people and energising its organisational structure, Mr. Govindan told a press conference here. The meeting is expected to give shape to an action plan in this regard.
The decision was finalised by the State committee which met here. While he spoke about the meeting’s mandate of reinforcing the party’s organisational structure at all levels, Mr. Govindan did not give a clear reply to questions on whether it involves leadership changes at the top. The extended State committee meet assumes significance against the backdrop of the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front’s State Assembly election debacle earlier this year. Govindan said the State committee meeting, presided over by C.S. Sujatha, considered CPI(M) Central committee’s reports on the Assembly elections in five States, the report of the political situation in Kerala and a scrutiny of the party membership.
On Waqf Board The party State secretary alleged that Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan is showing undue haste to appoint two non-Muslim members in the State Waqf Board and implement the Sangh Parivar agenda. He also dismissed the charge that the previous Pinarayi Vijayan government had given its assurance that non-Muslim members will be included on the Waqf Board at a later stage. Candlelit protest The CPI(M) will organise a candlelit protest at 7 p.m. on July 26 to expose the Congress-led UDF government’s failure to prevent a power supply crisis, he said. The party is also planning to organise protests on July 31 and August 1 and 2 against the operational crisis faced by local bodies.
Govindan also termed the police case registered in Kochi in connection with a protest meet held in solidarity with the ongoing student agitation in New Delhi an indication of the V.D. Satheesan government’s support of the BJP government’s agenda. The Congress had joined the protests in New Delhi at the last moment faced with no other alternative, he alleged.
