Educationists, writers, and leaders of various progressive and student organisations have objected to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s proposal that private schools adopt rural government schools and provide teachers. More than 17 people, including developmental educationist Niranjanaradhya and Dalit activist Mavalli Shankar, have written an open letter to the Chief Minister stating that his proposal that private schools, which charge an annual fee of more than ₹50,000, adopt rural government schools and provide teachers is “highly condemnable”.
“This is not a move to strengthen public education; rather, it is a new type of privatisation model that entrusts the future of children from poor, Dalit, tribal, backward, minority, and weaker sections, studying in government schools, to the whim of private educational institutions,” they opined.
“Education is not a charity or a corporate social responsibility scheme; it is a fundamental right recognised under Article 21-A of the Constitution. It is
an irresponsible proposal for the government to provide teachers from private institutions to government schools without filling the vacant posts of teachers,” they said.
