The posters, reportedly put up by his supporters, urge Annamalai to take his “next avatar" to “save Tamil Nadu", even as social media remains flooded with rumours of a possible split from the BJP and the launch of a new outfit. The latest developments come amid renewed chatter over Annamalai’s future within the BJP after he was replaced as Tamil Nadu BJP president earlier this year. Supporters on social media had even floated possible party names and flag designs for a prospective political movement led by him.
Annamalai is not expected to immediately launch a political party, sources told CNN-News18. Instead, discussions are reportedly underway over starting a “non-political movement" aimed at addressing public grievances. Depending on the public response to such a movement, a decision could later be taken on whether to transform it into a political party. It was also learnt that Annamalai is likely to travel to New Delhi to meet the BJP high command, following which more clarity could emerge on his political plans. The speculation has also been linked to some of Annamalai’s recent public positions that appeared to diverge from the BJP’s line on certain issues. One such issue was his criticism of the Centre-backed CBSE notification making three languages compulsory for Class IX students from the current academic year. Annamalai had urged the Union Education Ministry to withdraw the notification and honour the earlier timeline of implementing the rule from the 2029-30 academic year. The CBSE had on May 15 issued a notification introducing a third compulsory language for Class IX students in affiliated schools from 2026 itself, advancing a deadline that had previously been set for 2029-30.
Annamalai said the move had come as a shock to many parents, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where students had already chosen their language options in earlier classes. In a statement posted on X, Annamalai said forcing Class IX students to suddenly learn an additional language would place unnecessary pressure on children and impact learning outcomes. PTI reported that while Annamalai had earlier welcomed the three-language framework for younger students, he objected to the sudden advancement of the deadline for older students. Meanwhile, the BJP circles have acknowledged that Annamalai helped increase the party’s visibility and vote share in Tamil Nadu during his tenure as state president, even if it did not translate into significant electoral victories, CNN-News18 has learnt. As speculation continues, BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu are reportedly waiting for an official word from Annamalai himself. For now, neither the BJP nor Annamalai has publicly confirmed any plan to float a separate political party.
