Sahyadri Arts College, a constituent college of Kuvempu University in Shivamogga, has launched a series of lectures by “Professors of Practice," under which activists, thinkers, writers and experts from various fields will take classes. As part of the first series of lectures, on Friday, the students had the opportunity to listen to K.T. Gangadhar, a senior activist of the farmers' movement, M.
Gurumurthy, State convener of Dalit Sangharsha Samiti; N. Ravi Kumar, a poet and journalist; Padmakshi K., a writer; and Preetham, a physician and writer. Gangadhar spoke to the students of economics about the agricultural economy. Gurumurthy took a class for students of political science on the history of the Dalit movement in Karnataka and the changes it brought in the lives of downtrodden people of the State.
Mr. Ravi Kumar spoke on ‘”Democracy and Media” to students of Journalism and Mass Communication. Padmakshi gave a talk on P. Lankesh’s poem Avva to students of English literature. Preetham spoke on the literary contributions of Poorna Chandra Tejaswi. Sharath Ananthamurthy, Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, who inaugurated the series, appreciated the initiative and stressed the need for such attempts. “When the UGC introduced this concept, it was limited to industrialists and successful business people.
However, it is important to bring in people from different fields, particularly those involved in social movements. They need to share their knowledge with our students," he stated. Siraj Ahmed, principal of the college; Prof. Meti Mallikarjun, Prof. H.P. Manjunath; and others were present at the programme.
