Thirteen people, including an infant, were killed on Friday (July 24, 2026) after boulders reportedly fell on a moving vehicle at Karunallah in Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. The vehicle was on its way from Kullu to Pangi when boulders fell from the hillside and slammed into it, crushing it.
Two passengers managed to survive by jumping out just before the sports utility vehicle, carrying 15 people, was fully crushed. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed grief over the death of 13 persons in the road accident and directed the Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul and Spiti to supervise the rescue and relief operations.
He also directed the authorities to provide all possible assistance to the next of kin of the deceased and the best possible treatment to the injured.
Deputy Commissioner Kiran Badana told media persons that a rescue team was dispatched as soon as the incident was reported and that relief operations were underway.
