Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday approved the construction of four new railway lines aimed at strengthening rail connectivity between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The decision includes the construction of the third and fourth railway lines on a key economic corridor, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced. Addressing a Cabinet briefing, Vaishnaw said, “Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the Cabinet meeting, which approved two major decisions. The first is the construction of the third and fourth railway lines on a key economic corridor connecting Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka." The minister said the project is expected to improve freight movement, enhance passenger connectivity and boost economic activity across the region.
Apart from the railway project, the Cabinet also approved a new scheme aimed at developing India’s chemicals sector. Explaining the decision, Vaishnaw said, “The second is the approval of a new scheme to develop India’s chemicals sector in a completely new way. The chemicals sector, like semiconductors, is a foundational industry for the economy. That is why it was important to adopt a fresh approach for its development." Andhra Pradesh-Karnataka Railway Project The newly approved railway project will cover the Guntakal-Ballari section, forming part of a larger rail corridor connecting Guntakal, Ballari, Hosapete, Hubballi and Ankola. Giving details of the project, Vaishnaw said, “A few months ago, the Cabinet had approved the construction of the third and fourth railway lines between Ballari and Hosapete. Today, it has approved the third and fourth lines between Guntakal and Ballari. The DPR for the third and fourth lines between Hosapete and Hubballi is already under preparation." That is the biggest significance of today’s approval," he said. Project Cost And Timeline The approved railway project spans 46 kilometres and involves an estimated investment of Rs 1,264 crore. It is expected to significantly strengthen rail connectivity between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka while supporting industrial growth and logistics in the region. The project will include one major bridge over the Vedavati River, seven other major bridges and 52 minor bridges. According to Vaishnaw, the railway line is expected to be completed within three years.
