Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday criticised Delhi University after it urged students and faculty to stay away from protests at Jantar Mantar. He accused the varsity of threatening students for exercising their democratic rights and said it would be held accountable. Gandhi was responding to a social media post by the University of Delhi on Thursday night, in which it said any unlawful assemblies or demonstrations at Jantar Mantar could invite legal action. Tagging the university's post, Gandhi said, "How dare you threaten students for exercising their democratic rights? Please note, you are the ones that will be held accountable when the time comes." He also said, "Please note, you are the ones that will be held accountable when the time comes." In its post, the university said, "Dear students and faculty, your safety matters to us. Please note that any unlawful assemblies or demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, which are strictly regulated as per the directives of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India, may invite legal action." It added that such activities could pose serious risks to students' personal safety and significantly affect their academic progress and professional opportunities.
"Accordingly, all students are urged to stay away from Jantar Mantar and to prioritise their safety and compliance with the law. Furthermore, you are advised to exercise caution as a significant amount of fake and misleading content is being created and circulated to fuel the situation," the university said. The Cockroach Janta Party has been protesting at Jantar Mantar since June 20, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak. The exchange between Gandhi and Delhi University came against the backdrop of these ongoing protests and the university's warning to students to stay away.
