(IMAGE: PTI FILE) With a smiling face, Gitanjali J Angmo, the wife of activist Sonam Wangchuk, welcomed the assurances given by the Centre amid students’ protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi over the paper leak controversy linked to the Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2026. Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, Angmo, an educator herself, noted that Wangchuk had asked the government to ensure none of the protesting students would be harmed in any way. However, she noted that there could be other “nefarious" elements trying to mar the movement and bring in their “vested interests". “Sonam asked the government to assure none of the protestors would be harmed in any way, either legally or physically, because it was their Constitutional right.
They have demonstrated utmost peace, resilience and patience. They have become a role model to other Gen-Zs in the world. There could be other nefarious elements, who are trying to take advantage of the situation and bring in their vested interests, or trying to mar the movement", she said. Angmo put forth the message of her husband, Sonam Wangchuk, and said that such “elements" needed to be identified through a proper inquiry. “He was very clear that there had be a proper inquiry to identify those elements. As far as our children are concerned, they have been carrying out protests at Jantar Mantar in utmost peaceful and mature ways", she said. “All protests have been gracefully met by the government. We are thankful to the government", she added. In the early hours of Friday, Sonam Wangchuk –– who was on an indefinite hunger strike following the paper leak row –– ended his fast at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh. Accompanying them was several top leaders of the Ladakh Apex Body.
Angmo stressed that the families who lost their kids should be compensated. As many as 21 students had died by suicide, citing severe distress, following the paper leaks after the May 3 NEET-UG examination. Calling for broader educational reforms, she continued: “Reform the educational system and those who failed in it should take accountability. Today, the entire Parliament stands united to solve the problems of youth of the country". ‘Govt Assured Of Educational Reform’ Detailing on what promises were made by the government, Gitanjali J Angmo told CNN-News18, “The government has given assurance of educational reforms. I think there is a lot of moral pressure." While the demand seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister has been dropped by Wangchuk, Angmo upheld the same, saying: “Students have the right to demand resignation". Calling for unity on issues concerning students and youth, she said: “We need to come out of our ego, be it the ruling party or the opposition. Let us unite without using vote bank." Earlier, in a video message posted on ‘X’, Wangchuk said that three key promises were made by the government.
