(Source: Reuters) The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has said negotiations with the Pakistan-backed administration in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) have shown “positive progress", but stressed that a final agreement has not yet been reached. Speaking amid the ongoing talks, prominent JAAC core member Umar Nazir Kashmiri said the committee wants a meaningful resolution and not deception, asserting that they “want fruitful negotiation; not betrayal." The latest round of negotiations resulted in a consensus on detainees and missing persons. However, the signing of a formal agreement has been postponed due to unresolved issues related to the organisation’s ban and Section 302 murder cases.
Issuing a stern warning to the Pakistan authorities and the PoK administration, Kashmiri said that “no scheming is accepted" amid the ongoing talks. He cautioned that the committee would launch an immediate “long march" if it was deceived during the negotiation process. The JAAC said it expects a clearer picture on the proposed government pact within the next 24 to 48 hours as discussions move into the next phase to resolve FIRs and other legal disputes. Meanwhile, the committee honoured the martyrs of Kashmir during a massive sit-in in Rawalakot and urged the public to “stay ready" as sensitive legal hurdles continue to delay the final agreement between the PoK government and the JAAC. Why Tensions Persist In PoK The latest round of negotiations follows weeks of unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), where the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) had staged protests and a sit-in in Rawalakot while pressing the authorities to address its demands.
The committee has accused the authorities of illegally detaining and torturing activists, carrying out enforced disappearances, and demolishing homes and shops. It has also sought the immediate release of detained leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir and other protesters. It was further triggered by the arrest and alleged enforced disappearance of senior trader leader and JAAC spokesperson Shaukat Nawaz Mir, along with hundreds of civil rights activists. Mir was reportedly detained during a joint security operation involving Pakistani intelligence agencies and local police while he was on his way to a sit-in protest. His detention sparked widespread public outrage across several parts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
