Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam confirmed on Thursday that Dhaka had received the invitation from New Delhi and forwarded it to the Prime Minister’s Office. Official sources indicated that Rahman is likely to attend the summit. If the visit materialises, it will provide the first opportunity for a bilateral meeting between Modi and Rahman since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) returned to power following the February parliamentary elections.
India is hosting the summit as the BRICS Chair for 2026 under the theme “Building Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainable Development." Although Bangladesh is neither a BRICS member nor an observer, the invitation underscores New Delhi’s effort to deepen engagement with its eastern neighbour. The diplomatic outreach comes at a time when India-Bangladesh ties have remained strained. New Delhi had maintained close relations with the previous Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina, while Rahman’s government has adopted a different foreign policy approach. Earlier this year, Rahman chose to visit China via Malaysia before making a trip to India, signalling a departure from his predecessor’s policy of prioritising New Delhi. Responding to questions on bilateral ties, Shama Obaed Islam said Bangladesh seeks “peace and stability" in the region and expects cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. According to government sources, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold bilateral talks with Rahman on the sidelines of the summit if the visit goes ahead. The discussions are likely to focus on rebuilding bilateral ties and addressing issues of mutual interest.
The summit will bring together leaders of the expanded 11-member BRICS grouping, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with leaders from Brazil, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia. Iran’s representation at the summit remains unclear. The invitation continues India’s practice of engaging Bangladesh at major multilateral forums. In recent years, New Delhi invited former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the G20 Summit and Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus to the Voice of the Global South Summit. Diplomatic observers view Rahman’s possible visit as an opportunity to open a new chapter in India-Bangladesh relations through sustained dialogue and greater cooperation.
