Hydrogen Technology Powers India’s Green Rail Push The train is equipped with two 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen-electric propulsion systems, replacing conventional diesel engines. Electricity is generated through onboard fuel cells, where hydrogen combines with oxygen to power the train. The only direct by-products of this process are water vapour and heat, making it a zero-emission mode of transport. The project is expected to significantly reduce dependence on diesel and conventional electricity while supporting India’s broader climate goals under the Green Hydrogen Mission. Affordable Travel With Long-Term Sustainability Despite using advanced green technology, passenger fares have remained unchanged. Ticket prices continue to match those of regular Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) services, ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 25, ensuring affordable travel for commuters. The 10-coach train is backed by an indigenously developed hydrogen storage and refuelling facility in Jind, designed to support long-term operations. Besides offering an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel-powered trains, the project is expected to lower fuel dependence and strengthen India’s self-reliance in clean transportation infrastructure.
