The accused was arrested, while both the BSF and local police launched separate investigations to ascertain the motive behind the deadly firing. The incident took place at the 17 Mile Sector Headquarters in Baishnabnagar, where the headquarters of the 119th Battalion and the 71st Battalion are located. According to preliminary information, a jawan of the 119th Battalion allegedly opened fire on personnel belonging to the 71st Battalion while they were resting inside the camp.
The accused was identified as Shivam Mishra, a resident of Chhattisgarh. Following the firing, he was taken into custody. The two BSF personnel were killed on the spot in the incident. They were identified as Ajay Kumar Singh (51), a resident of the Manjhi area in Bihar’s Chhapra district, and Ambadas (Ambadar) Suresh Durgu (37), a resident of Gadchiroli, Maharashtra. Both were serving with the 71st Battalion. Another jawan, Vikas Verma, also identified as Vikas Brahm in some reports, sustained critical injuries in the firing. The 44-year-old BSF personnel, who hails from Hooghly district in West Bengal, was rushed to Malda Medical College and Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. The bodies of the two deceased jawans were also shifted to the same hospital for post-mortem procedures. Senior BSF officials reached the hospital soon after the incident and were monitoring the situation. While the exact reason behind the firing remains unclear, IANS quoted BSF sources as claiming that the accused had a history of disciplinary action.
The report said that Shivam Mishra had allegedly opened fire at his colleagues around a year ago and was subsequently punished under BSF law. That punishment reportedly ended only a few days ago, and preparations were underway to send him home when Thursday’s incident occurred. Officials, however, did not confirm whether the earlier disciplinary action had any direct connection with the latest firing. Following the incident, BSF Malda Sector Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Surendra Kumar Jha said the force launched an internal inquiry to determine the sequence of events and the circumstances leading to the firing.
