Western Ganga theme chosen for Lalbagh’s Independence Day flower show

For the upcoming flower show to mark the 79th Independence Day on August 15, the Horticulture Department has chosen the rule of the Western Ganga dynasty as the theme for the show at Lalbagh. Speaking to The Hindu, M. Jagadeesh, Joint Director, Horticulture Department (Parks and Gardens), said, “We had sent around 20 options to the concerned officials and the Chief Minister’s Office. Among them, we have been directed to showcase the history of the Western Ganga dynasty.
They ruled the region from 350 CE to 1000 CE and are credited with establishing a strong, unified kingdom in Karnataka, especially in southern Karnataka.” Jagadeesh further added, “To gather information on the Western Gangas, our team has contacted various historians, academics, and the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi. Based on their inputs, we are preparing floral displays that will be exhibited at the flower show.” He also highlighted that a special model showcasing the architecture of the Ganga period is being built in the Glass House.
Models depicting important rulers of the Ganga period, Ganga capitals, their intricacies, notable temples of Talakad, paintings, and other features will be unveiled during the exhibition. “The world-famous statue of Bahubali and other monuments at Shravanabelagola were carved during the Ganga era. These are examples of the remarkable architecture patronised by the Gangas. As per our research, they also gave special priority to irrigation. Various embankments on the Cauvery River were built by them, and they arranged for water to be channelled through canals to agricultural fields,” he said.
Jagadeesh also said that the department plans to showcase other ancient dynasties, including the Kadambas, Cholas, Chalukyas, Hoysalas, and Rashtrakutas, as themes for future editions of the flower show. The flower show will be held from August 6 to 17. Like every year, it will run for 12 days.
