MeBeMe is a new app that acts as an “interrupter,” designed to help users become their best selves instead of getting lost in endless scrolling. Rather than blocking access to their phones, the app delivers small “missions” or tasks that encourage real-world habits aligned with the person users want to become. The app joins a growing wave of anti-doomscrolling tools as more people look for ways to reduce social media addiction. What sets MeBeMe apart is its approach: instead of locking users out of distracting apps, it nudges them toward meaningful actions.
To get started, users choose an identity they want to embody, such as a “lifelong learner.” MeBeMe then sends occasional notifications with quick tasks related to that identity. For example, it might suggest watching an educational video for seven minutes. Someone who selects the “classics reader” identity could receive a mission to attend a local book club or lecture. The app offers more than 75 identities across several categories. Under “Mind,” users can choose roles like mathematician, scientist, historian, or chess player. The “Body” category includes athlete, dancer, cyclist, and runner.
There are also categories focused on relationships and home-based interests like cooking and gardening. Users can select multiple identities at once, allowing them to build habits across different areas of their lives. A feature called “Break Your Scroll” even uses Siri to read the messages aloud. MeBeMe officially launched last Wednesday. It was created by Eric Wolfram, who originally built the app for his son before realizing it was just as helpful for himself.
“Small actions, repeated over time, shape who you are,” Wolfram writes on his website. “Becoming who you are is a lifelong project.” Wolfram also says privacy is one of MeBeMe’s defining features. The app requires no account, stores all user data on the device, and allows users to turn off anonymous usage data sharing. MeBeMe is available as a free download for iOS devices, with an Android version coming soon. There are no or subscriptions.
