Ranganaya Davangere has organised a two-week training workshop in theatre and music for youth in Belagavi. Mallikarjuna Kadakol, director Rangayana Davangere, inaugurated the workshop at the Basavaraj Kattimani Auditorium on Thursday. The two-week long course will be conducted by resource persons experienced in professional theatre and classical music. Kadakol said that professional theatre has a rich heritage of performance, stage music and dance. “While hindustani music is important in North Karnataka, carnatic (Dakshinadi) music tradition has grown in South Karnataka.
It is against this backdrop that the term ‘Natya Sangeet Mandali’ was used in the names of previous professional theatre companies. Davangere Rangayana has already successfully organised such workshops in Davangere and Mysore with the aim of introducing the musical heritage of professional theatre to the next generation,” Mr. Kadakol said. He spoke of the changes taking place in professional theatre in recent times and the new dimensions that theatre needs to adopt.
Theatre personality Enagi Subhash spoke about the professional theatre companies started by his father Enagi Balappa and others of his time and the heritage of stage music. Y.B. Himmadi, president, Basavaraj Kattimani Foundation, spoke of the rich heritage of professional theatre and its cultural significance. Camp Director Rajaprabhu Dhotre explained the purpose of the workshop and the nature of the training. The 20 candidates selected from Belagavi division will present their performance on the last day of training.
Camp coordinator N. Nataraj welcomed the participants. Joint Director of Kannada and Culture Department K.H. Channur, resource persons Gurunath Kulkarni and Manjula Joshi were present. Basavaraj Kuppasa Gowda and others were present.
