The death toll in the rain-triggered flash floods and landslides across the Jammu region has risen to 26 after the body of a 25-year-old woman was recovered from Poonch district on Thursday, officials said. Across Jammu and Kashmir, 29 people have died in rain-related incidents so far, including two deaths in Bandipora district and one in Budgam district in the Kashmir valley. Officials said search operations are continuing as six people are still missing.
Read Full Story Officials said the body of Khalida Kouser, wife of Yasar Iqbal, was recovered near a footbridge in Surankote during a search operation. She had been washed away in the flash floods that hit the area on the night of July 18. The decomposed body was shifted to the Sub-district Hospital in Surankote, where village lambardar Zakir Hussain identified it. After legal formalities were completed, the body was handed over to her family for the last rites, officials said.
With the latest recovery, the death toll in Poonch district has gone up to 17, the highest among the affected districts, officials said. Those who died in the flash floods in Murrah hamlet on the night of July 18 were Noor Safia, 59, wife of Mohd Latief; Sajad Ahmed, 16; Haqnawaz Ahmed, 11; Shahnawaz Ahmed, 11; Khalida Kouser, 25, wife of Yasar Iqbal; Sofian, 2; Bano Bi, 60, wife of Mohd Hussain; and Mohd Akram, 7, son of Mohd Liaqat.
The latest recovery has taken the Jammu region toll to 26 and the overall toll in Jammu and Kashmir to 29, while the search for six missing people is still underway. Ends
