The revised analysis shows that 21,674 people died between June 17 and July 2, compared with the 15,910 deaths normally expected during the same period a 36% rise in mortality. Health officials said the figures are based on “excess deaths", a statistical measure used to estimate the overall impact of an event by comparing actual deaths with historical averages.
