Sharif, who is also the elder brother of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, wants to “personally oversee" the region’s development, insisting that it is his “second home", according to NDTV. He expressed this desire during an election rally in Muzaffarabad –– the capital city of PoK –– earlier this week. “It is my second home. My ancestors migrated from Kashmir," he said.
He said if his party –– the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) –– won, he would ask his brother to make him the Prime Minister of PoK. “If my party wins, I will ask PM Shehbaz Sharif to make me the prime minister of Kashmir (PoK) so that I can personally oversee the region’s development," Sharif said. PoK In Turmoil Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is currently gripped by massive anti-government mobilisation, violent clashes, and a heavy military crackdown, with unrest heightened across major cities including Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Mirpur, and Sudhnoti. Led by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), the protestors have been actively demanding structural economic relief, including subsidized wheat, lower electricity tariffs, and royalty from regional hydroelectric projects. They have also been seeking an end to the extreme privileges and special allowances granted to government officials and political elites. With Pakistan-occupied Kashmir set to hold elections between July 27 and August 10, PML-N is in the fray against the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), an ally in the federal government.
The unrest in PoK has resulted in 30 casualties so far. Last week, the JAAC had suspended its planned march until July 21, citing its “one final opportunity" that it had granted the Pakistani government to address its demands. However, the group once again announced a mega protest, warning that the long march toward Muzaffarabad would resume this week. Meanwhile, it also declared that ongoing sit-in demonstrations across PoK would continue.
