Complaint filed with NHRC seeking independent inquiry into the alleged police “brutality” on July 20 NEW DELHI: A complaint has been filed with Human Rights Commission (NHRC), seeking independent inquiry into the alleged police “brutality” on July 20 against students protesting over the NEET-UG exam paper leak issue here, including allegations of misconduct by male police personnel against female students.Congress member and advocate Virender Vashist in the complaint also urged the commission to look into allegations that protesting students, who were exercising their fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution, were subjected to “excessive and disproportionate use of force by police”.“The incident has caused widespread concern among students, parents, and members of civil society. The allegations of excessive force and misconduct by law enforcement authorities demand an independent, impartial, and transparent inquiry to uphold the rule of law,” the complaint stated.He has urged the panel to direct its investigation division to conduct an impartial inquiry into the incident; constitute an NHRC team for a visit to Jantar Mantar and interact with victim students, eyewitnesses; record statements of affected female students; call for detailed reports, CCTV footage, body-camera recordings, deployment records, medical records, and all other relevant material from Delhi Police and other authorities concerned.The complainant has urged the NHRC to recommend appropriate action against any officials found responsible for the violations and also recommend compensation and any other appropriate relief to the victims.
