Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday launched a large anti-terror crackdown across several districts in the Valley after a policeman was shot dead in Anantnag earlier in the day. Officials said more than 1,000 suspected overground workers linked to terrorist groups were rounded up in six districts for questioning. The action began soon after Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat visited the attack site to assess the situation first-hand, officials said. Head Constable Ashiq Hussain was killed at Lal Chowk in Anantnag district.

A Srinagar police spokesperson said the operation, aimed at dismantling the ecosystem supporting terrorism, started with extensive raids across the district after the attack in Anantnag. “The coordinated operations, carried out on the basis of credible intelligence and as part of an ongoing investigation, resulted in detention of nearly 700 suspected OGWs for questioning and verification in accordance with established legal procedures,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said the operations were meant to identify and neutralise networks that provide logistical, financial, communication, transportation, shelter and other support to terrorist organisations. In Pulwama, police set up mobile check-points at several places to stop the movement of subversive elements, while Additional Superintendent of Police Shafat Najar supervised frisking and search operations, officials said. In Shopian, police carried out a wide security and counter-terror operation to prevent any attempt to disturb peace and to maintain a strong security grid, an official said.
In Budgam, police launched preventive raids across the district after the attack in Anantnag. “Over 200 suspects including OGWs, miscreants and narco-offenders were detained for questioning and verification,” an official said. The crackdown across six districts followed the killing of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain in Anantnag, with police saying the operations were focused on tracking down the assailant and breaking support networks linked to terrorist groups.
