(Image Courtesy: PTI) Uttar Pradesh procured paddy from 80,39,539 farmers between 2017-18 and 2025-26, transferring more than Rs 1.03 lakh crore directly into their bank accounts, according to the state’s Food and Civil Supplies Department. The department said procurement of paddy, bajra, jowar and maize has been carried out at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) through a system of timely payments and technology-driven verification.

How Has Paddy Procurement Changed? The state has increased the number of procurement centres, introduced online registration for farmers, implemented a digital verification system and strengthened direct bank transfers for payments, according to the department. Officials said these changes have made the process simpler and more transparent, allowing farmers to receive MSP payments on time. Coarse Cereals Added To The Procurement System Beyond paddy and wheat, the state has extended procurement to coarse cereals. Government procurement of bajra began in 2022-23. By 2025-26, 7,13,759.88 metric tonnes had been procured from 1,48,718 farmers, with payments of Rs 1,854 crore. Jowar procurement began in 2023-24. Over the following three years, 26,972 farmers received payments totalling Rs 363.35 crore.

Maize procurement between 2018-19 and 2025-26 covered 34,578 farmers, who received payments of Rs 582.04 crore. Department’s Assessment Officials of the Food and Civil Supplies Department said the procurement system now functions as a component of farmers’ economic security rather than only a purchasing mechanism. They said timely payments, a transparent process and expanded procurement centres have strengthened farmers’ participation and added momentum to the rural economy.
