An education activist on hunger strike has set conditions for ending the fast after meeting two Union ministers at a Gurugram hospital. The demands include an assurance that participants in the July 20 protest will not face punitive or retaliatory legal action, no further use of excessive police force, compensation for families of students who died by suicide during the NEET controversy, and a discussion in Parliament.
The activist has reduced the earlier demand for the Union Education Minister’s resignation to consideration of resignation and says the fast will continue if the assurances are not given. The government has indicated willingness to hold a parliamentary debate and is pursuing talks with a protest group, which has sought a neutral venue. The bulletin also covers outreach to the Leader of the Opposition and asks whether the engagements can produce a breakthrough in the protests.
