For India, the 2026 edition will mark the country’s 19th appearance at the Commonwealth Games since making its debut in 1934. A 124-member contingent will represent the country in Glasgow, Scotland, with athletes competing across eight able-bodied sports and five para-sports, aiming to bag medals on the global stage. India will start their campaign with bowls events across men’s and women’s disciplines.

But this time the sport will be referred to as bowls. In a first for the CWG, Glasgow 2026 will host both Bowls and Para Bowls indoors, creating a unique and more intimate atmosphere for athletes and spectators. Bowls is among the six original sports featured on the CWG programme and has been part of every edition since the inaugural Games in 1930, apart from Kingston 1966, when the event wasn’t held because of the lack of suitable bowls facilities.
The Indian women’s lawn bowls team etched its name in history at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, as Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey beat South Africa to clinch a historic gold medal in the women’s fours event. The opening ceremony will be held at Glasgow’s iconic OVO Hydro, a venue renowned for hosting some of the world’s biggest music stars and live performances.
