Three members of a family, including a 55-year-old woman and her two sons, died of suspected suffocation inside a newly constructed water tank in Uttarakhand's Haldwani on Tuesday. The incident took place in Haldwani’s Gaulapar area, where one of the victims, Saraswati Devi, had recently got a water tank constructed at her home.
According to initial information, her elder son entered the tank to remove the shuttering installed during its construction. Seeing him collapse, Saraswati Devi climbed inside in an attempt to rescue him but also fell unconscious due to the lack of oxygen.
Moments later, the younger son entered the tank to save both his mother and elder brother. However, he too lost consciousness inside the enclosed space. All three died of suspected suffocation inside the tank before they could be rescued. Villagers later pulled the victims out of the tank and rushed them to Sushila Tiwari Hospital.
Doctors declared all three dead on arrival. The deaths of three members of the same family in a single incident have left the household and the village in mourning. The incident has also highlighted the dangers of entering enclosed spaces such as water tanks without adequate ventilation or safety precautions. Ends
