BIS seizes ₹10 crore worth of 7.875 kg non-hallmarked gold jewellery in Telangana’s Warangal raid

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) seized approximately 7.875 kg of non-hallmarked gold jewellery worth around ₹10 crore during a raid on a jewellery shop in Warangal district, Telangana, for allegedly violating the mandatory hallmarking provisions under the BIS Act, 2016. The search and seizure operation was carried out by officials of the BIS Hyderabad Branch Office under the directions of P.V. Srikanth, Director and Head of the office.
During the inspection, officials found a large quantity of gold jewellery being offered for sale without the mandatory BIS hallmark, in violation of the hallmarking requirements notified by the Union government. The seized stock included necklace sets, rings, chains, earrings and other gold jewellery articles weighing about 7.875 kg. BIS officials estimated the value of the seized jewellery at around ₹10 crore. The agency said further action has been initiated against the establishment under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016.
Speaking after the operation, Mr. Srikanth said 13 districts in Telangana, including Warangal and Hanamkonda, are covered under the mandatory hallmarking regime. He urged jewellers in these districts to sell only BIS-hallmarked gold jewellery bearing a genuine Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number and comply with the provisions of the BIS Act. He also advised consumers to purchase only BIS-hallmarked gold jewellery carrying a valid HUID, verify the HUID through the BIS CARE mobile application before purchase and insist on obtaining a proper invoice.
Consumers can also use the app to report instances of misuse of hallmarking or the sale of jewellery without a genuine HUID.
