A large crowd of protesters took out an unannounced march in New Delhi's Connaught Place late on Tuesday night and clashed with police, throwing stones at the personnel and the Rapid Action Force (RAF), as Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)'s agitation demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and greater accountability over the alleged NEET paper leak continued. The crowd was also seen attacking an RAF personnel as the situation turned chaotic. Following the stone-pelting, the security personnel dispersed the gathering by force, with police stating that the organisers had not announced any march beyond the designated protest site at Jantar Mantar.
An FIR has also been registered against the protesters for violence and attack on RFA personnel in Connaught Place. Connaught Place, in the heart of the national capital, was among the areas that witnessed intense violence on Monday as thousands marched towards Parliament during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)'s 'Chalo Sansad' protest. According to officials, protesters at the Outer Circle of Connaught Place threw stones at police personnel and damaged several police vehicles during the unrest. Meanwhile, Delhi Police has registered six FIRs in connection with the violence, vandalism and other incidents linked to the 'Chalo Sansad' march and the farmers' protest held on July 20.
Police sources said investigators are likely to examine what they described as a "larger criminal conspiracy" behind the violence. The cases have been registered at Parliament Street, Connaught Place and other police stations under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Arms Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The FIRs accuse protesters of forming an unlawful assembly, disrupting public order, obstructing government officials from discharging their duties, engaging in violence, and damaging public property. Following Monday's clashes and the volatile situation that ensued, security has been significantly tightened across the national capital.
Multi-layered barricades have been erected at strategic locations, vehicle checks have been intensified, and additional police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed at sensitive areas, key government installations and major intersections.
