Indian Businessman In Talks To Buy Stake In Liverpool Worth Thousands Of Crores Published By, Last Updated: July 22, 2026, 06:30 IST Indian-origin businessman Amit Bhatia's group is in talks to acquire a minority stake in Liverpool, worth thousands of crore. Amit Bhatia (L) is in talks to buy a stake in Liverpool FC. (Instagram, AFP) A group of investors led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia is in talks to acquire a minority stake in Liverpool, potentially adding one of the world’s biggest clubs to his growing sports investment portfolio. Bhatia is the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, who recently acquired a majority stake in IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals in a deal that valued the team at approximately ₹21,286 crore. According to The Athletic, Bhatia is leading a consortium in discussions with Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the American investment group that has owned Liverpool since 2010. The proposed investment is set to be similar in size to the stake FSG diluted to Dynasty Equity in 2025 — who bought 3% for around £150 million (₹19,334 crore), valuing the Premier League club at nearly £4.5 billion (₹57,999 crore).
“An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club," an FSG spokesperson said in a statement. Bhatia recently stepped down from the board of Championship club Queens Park Rangers and transferred his shares to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam. The talks are reportedly at an early stage, with Bhatia having appointed advisers to work on the potential deal. The 46-year-old has not publicly commented on the discussions. Born in London, Bhatia studied at Cornell University in the United States. He is currently chairman of British construction company Breedon Group, managing director of AyBe Capital Advisors and a founding partner of property investment firm Summix Capital. His father-in-law Mittal is one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, with Forbes estimating his fortune at around £23 billion (₹2.96 lakh crore). What this might mean for Liverpool’s fans in India Liverpool is one of the most popular clubs in the world. In English football, the Merseyside-based club has won 20 League Titles and 8 FA Cups.
On the global stage, they are England’s most decorated team in European competition, with 6 UEFA Champions League trophies. While behind the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona in popularity, Liverpool have a significant fanbase in India. Premier League clubs are increasingly earning more revenue from non-European markets than their traditional audiences, which is prompting their outreach to Asia and the Americas. Cricket is still the king in India, but the appetite for English football is ever-growing. If this move goes through, it would be a rare representation of the country in the ownership at the highest level of English football.
