Representational image Two young men from Karnataka who were trapped inside a Chinese-operated cyber scam compound in Myanmar have been rescued in a joint operation by the Karnataka Cyber Command, which achieved a major breakthrough while working in close coordination with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the Indian Embassy in Myanmar. According to officials, the victims were confined inside a Chinese-controlled scam compound in Myanmar’s Kayin State, close to the Thailand border. The compound is among several such facilities allegedly run by Chinese syndicates that traffic people from different countries and force them to carry out online romance scams and fraudulent investment schemes, commonly known as “pig-butchering" scams, targeting victims across the world.
The two have been safely repatriated to India and reached their homes late on Monday night. The rescue operation was launched after the Karnataka Cyber Command received specific intelligence from a Deputy Director of the Enforcement Directorate. Officials said swift coordination between the Cyber Command, I4C, and Indian diplomatic officials in Myanmar ensured the release and safe return of the two youths in record time. Officials said timely intervention by the agencies helped save the lives and future of the two young men. Following the rescue, the Karnataka Cyber Command issued a strong advisory urging youngsters to exercise extreme caution before accepting overseas job offers, particularly those promising high salaries for IT, customer support, data entry, or online marketing roles in countries such as Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia. The Cyber Command warned that many such offers, circulated through social media platforms, WhatsApp, and Telegram, are fronts for human trafficking networks that lure victims into cyber scam compounds. Victims are often forced to surrender their passports, confined against their will and coerced into committing cyber fraud while facing physical and mental abuse.
