(X) A fresh controversy erupted over the treatment of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee after hospital sources said that former CM and TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee was informed there was no medical requirement for his admission, even as the TMC alleged that pressure was being exerted on hospitals regarding his treatment following the attack on him in Sonarpur. Hospital sources told News18 that Mamata Banerjee was briefed about Abhishek Banerjee’s condition after his examination and was informed that hospitalisation was not necessary. The hospital later issued a written statement reiterating that admission was not required. There is no serious physical sign of injury except for bruises on the chest. They further alleged that while leaving the hospital premises, she accused the hospital of being aligned with the BJP and made remarks that were perceived as intimidating by hospital officials.
Amid the row, senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh alleged that pressure was being exerted on hospitals over Abhishek Banerjee’s treatment. Addressing reporters in Kolkata, Ghosh condemned the attack on the Trinamool Congress MP and blamed the BJP for the incident. “I strongly condemn the brutal attack on Abhishek Banerjee. He was travelling to meet the family of a deceased party worker and stand beside them during a difficult time. Instead of being allowed to carry out that humanitarian and political responsibility, he was targeted in what appears to have been a pre-planned and organised attack. The Bharatiya Janata Party is responsible for this incident." Ghosh claimed the attack on Abhishek Banerjee was “not spontaneous" and alleged that he was surrounded and repeatedly assaulted, with stones and eggs hurled at him. He said the injuries reflected the severity of the attack and claimed the consequences could have been worse had Banerjee not been wearing a helmet. Citing videos of the incident, Ghosh alleged that the attackers targeted Banerjee while raising slogans of “Jai Shri Ram". He described the incident as a “coordinated assault" and questioned why there were no adequate police security arrangements despite the sensitivity of the situation. He also sought an explanation for the absence of police deployment, asking who instructed the police not to provide security.
According to Ghosh, the presence of organised attackers and the lack of security personnel suggested both had been planned simultaneously. Ghosh further questioned the handling of Banerjee’s treatment after the attack. He alleged that after being taken to Apollo Hospital, treatment was delayed, and questions were raised about obtaining permission before medical care could proceed. “When an injured individual arrives at a hospital, treatment should begin immediately," he said, adding that no external approval should be required for emergency care. While saying he did not blame hospital authorities, Ghosh claimed they appeared to be functioning under “tremendous pressure". He said it was unacceptable if medical professionals were unable to independently decide how a patient should be treated due to pressure from external agencies. Referring to Belle Vue Hospital, Ghosh said Banerjee was shifted there and that doctors had conducted examinations and initiated all necessary tests and observations. “At this stage, his health and recovery remain our foremost concern," he said. He also alleged that pressure was being exerted on Belle Vue Hospital, with attempts being made to influence decisions regarding Banerjee’s admission and treatment. Ghosh said decisions on hospitalisation and discharge should be based solely on medical considerations and questioned why any administrative authority should interfere in the treatment of an injured patient. Calling the incident a broader concern for democracy and political intolerance, Ghosh said it raised questions about whether senior political leaders could visit families of deceased or injured party workers without facing violent attacks.
Describing the incident as an apparent attempt to cause grievous harm, he thanked journalists present at the scene for intervening and helping prevent the situation from becoming more dangerous. Ghosh said the party’s immediate priority was ensuring that Abhishek Banerjee received the best possible medical care and recovered fully. He added that legal remedies were being explored and that the party would pursue action against those responsible. Further political, legal and organisational steps, he said, would be decided after Banerjee’s treatment was completed and his condition stabilised.
