Chetan Bhagat Exclusive: Author Chetan Bhagat said, "I am not saying the government is doing nothing, but clearly, it has not been enough to satisfy people...The last two days were like the pressure cooker whistle going off. But the pressure was not created overnight โ it had been building for a long time and was ignored. Young people are often dismissed as a generation that does not matter. But they are the ones bearing the brunt of these problems. They have the most at stake..these young people need jobs, they need to pay bills, and they need opportunities.
The government knew the protest was happening. The date was announced, and arrangements could have been made...Instead, we saw barricades, force, and allegations being made against protesters. This is not how such situations should be handled. If there were stone pelters, catch them. But that does not justify indiscriminately using force or hitting young protesters. Maybe 10% of people are there to create trouble, but 90% are genuine students who want their voices heard. The police should make these young people feel safe, not create fear by using force...If there is a genuine issue and students are opposing the government, political parties will naturally try to join the movement.
There may also be some anti-social elements trying to take advantage. But that is not the responsibility of the students...Govt at the top level isn't getting the message."
