(PTI/File) The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Central Election Committee (CEC) is scheduled to meet at 5 pm on Sunday to discuss the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. All members of the BJP Parliamentary Board and the Central Election Committee are expected to attend the meeting. According to sources, the meeting will focus on the party’s strategy and candidates for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha polls.
A separate meeting involving the BJP’s top leadership is also likely to be held after the CEC meeting, sources added. The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for elections to 24 Rajya Sabha seats spread across 10 states, with polling set to take place on June 18. The vacancies have arisen due to the retirement of sitting Rajya Sabha members between June 21 and July 19, the poll body said. Among the states going to the polls, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka will each elect four members, while Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will elect three members each. Jharkhand has two seats falling vacant, while Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram will each witness elections for one seat.
The notification has also set June 8 as the last date for filing nominations. Voting, if required, will be conducted between 9 am and 4 pm on June 18. Counting of votes will begin at 5 pm the same day, with the entire election process scheduled to be completed by June 20. The Commission said electors will be permitted to mark their preferences only with the integrated violet sketch pens supplied by the Returning Officer. The use of any other pen while casting votes will not be allowed. To ensure free and fair elections, the ECI said observers will be deployed, and all necessary arrangements will be put in place. The Rajya Sabha elections will be held for seats in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Mizoram.
