In an interview, former senior IPS officer Yashovardhan Azad discussed the recent clashes between the Delhi Police and protesting students. Addressing the allegations of excessive force, Azad acknowledged that both sides suffered injuries, noting that 118 police personnel and 70 to 80 protesters were hurt. He stated, 'Both side excesses were committed,' while pointing out that the protesters' march to Parliament was illegal and unapproved.
Azad explained that the police had to resort to a lathi charge to control the mob, especially when barricades were overrun and stones were thrown. However, he also admitted to unprofessional conduct by the police, such as chasing away doctors and improperly firing tear gas shells. Ultimately, Azad emphasized that the police are merely an instrument and attributed the escalation to a political lapse, arguing that earlier political intervention could have prevented the unfortunate incident.
