Her body was recovered from a field near Amritsar-Bathinda Highway near Kotkapura on Tuesday, following which personnel from city police reached the spot, secured the area and shifted the body to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot for a post-mortem examination.
According to the preliminary investigation, Mahakpreet had married Jagdeep Singh on May 4 this year. The couple, both residents of the same village, had reportedly entered into a love marriage despite opposition from her family. Since their marriage around two-and-a-half months ago, they had been living in Bhagta Bhai Ka village in the neighbouring Bathinda district. Police said the incident unfolded on Monday evening when the couple was travelling on a motorcycle towards Kotkapura. As they neared the national highway, they were allegedly intercepted by members of Mahakpreet's family. Jagdeep Singh reportedly managed to escape from the spot, but Mahakpreet was caught by her relatives.
Investigators suspect that she was then assaulted with a sharp-edged weapon, resulting in her death. Her body was allegedly dumped in nearby fields before the accused fled the scene. Following information about the incident, Kotkapura Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar, along with other police officials, visited the location. A forensic team was also called to collect evidence and assist in the investigation. Police said preliminary findings indicate that the family was unhappy with Mahakpreet's decision to marry for love, and this appears to have been the motive behind the crime. Based on the initial evidence, a criminal case is being registered, and multiple teams have launched raids to trace and arrest those allegedly involved.
