The protest came as a surprise after senior Congress leaders gathered earlier in the day at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence at 10, Rajaji Marg. It was initially believed that the leaders had assembled to celebrate Kharge’s 84th birthday on Tuesday (July 21). However, in an unexpected move, the leaders left Kharge’s residence and headed directly to the Prime Minister’s residence, located around 2.3 km away.

The sudden march caught both the media and security personnel off guard, as there had been no indication of the Congress’s plan. Jitendra Singh accuses Rahul of changing stand Union Minister Jitendra Singh alleged that Rahul Gandhi went back on his word during discussions over the Congress protest. According to Singh, Rahul had initially agreed to end the sit-in if the government assured a discussion on the NEET issue in Parliament. However, the minister claimed that Rahul later introduced a fresh demand, insisting on the resignation of the Union Education Minister. Singh said the government remained willing to hold a discussion on the NEET issue in Parliament. He also alleged that the Congress had not submitted a formal notice seeking such a debate. Opposition support likely to grow The Congress protest is expected to receive support from other opposition parties. Akhilesh Yadav, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule and members of the Conference are likely to join the Congress dharna.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also said on Tuesday that she would travel to Delhi.
