Three people have been arrested in Kannauj for allegedly kidnapping a government school teacher and demanding a ransom of Rs 10 lakh, police said on Tuesday. The alleged mastermind was the teacher's friend, who is accused of planning the crime to repay debts after suffering heavy business losses. Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar said the accused were arrested on Monday night during a vehicle-checking drive near Mayapurwa Mor in the Birauli forest area by a joint team of the Sadar Kotwali police, the Special Operations Group and the surveillance cell. Police said efforts are continuing to trace another accused and recover the kidnapped teacher safely.
Read Full Story The arrested men were identified as Avinash Rajput, 34, Sarvendra Kumar Kushwaha, 26, and Keshav Pandit alias Keshav Awasthi, 20, all residents of Kannauj district. Police said they recovered two country-made.315 bore pistols, four live cartridges, a mobile phone and the Swift Dzire car allegedly used in the crime. According to police, the case first came to light after Deshraj Singh, father of missing teacher Rahul Kumar Rajput, 31, lodged a missing person's complaint on July 14. He told police that his son had left home for school but did not return.
On Monday, Deshraj Singh filed another complaint alleging that his son had been abducted by Avinash Rajput, Sarvendra Kumar Kushwaha, Keshav Pandit and another associate, Sagar, and that the kidnappers had demanded Rs 10 lakh as ransom. Police then converted the missing person's case into an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to kidnapping and other offences, and formed multiple teams to trace the accused. During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed that Avinash Rajput and Rahul Kumar Rajput were close friends. The SP said Avinash had been running a finance company in Noida but suffered losses of several crores of rupees due to alleged fraud, leaving him with debts of around Rs 2 crore.
"To repay the debt, he conspired with his associates to kidnap his friend Rahul Kumar Rajput and demand ransom from his family," Kumar said. Police said the investigation is underway, with efforts focused on tracing the remaining accused and ensuring the safe recovery of the kidnapped teacher. Ends
