Scores of students, led by office-bearers of All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) and All India Mahila Samskutika Sanghatane (AIMSS), staged a demonstration in Dharwad on Tuesday, condemning what they termed as police brutalities on the protesting students at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Monday. Condemning the police lathi-charge and lobbing of tear gas shells on the protesting students and demanding release of students’ leaders, the protestors gathered at the Vivekanand Circle in Dharwad and held a demonstration.
They condemned what they termed as oppressive, undemocratic acts by the government to snub a peaceful protest. Madhulata Goudar, president of Dharwad district unit of AIMSS, alleged that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre had misused the Delhi police to snub the peaceful protest. Lathi-charging the students and hurling tear gas shells at them had exposed the Centre’s undemocratic mindset, she said. As over 80 paper leaks had been reported in the country in the past one decade, she said that the development had resulted in loss of faith in the public examinations.
Instead of sticking to its ego, the Union government should hold talks with students and take measures to address their concerns, she said demanding resignation of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. District president of AIDYO Bhavanishankar Gouda said, “It was highly condemnable that even after 22 days of hunger strike, the government had failed to respond positively towards the demands of the students.” He alleged that to cover up its failure, the Union government had indulged in oppressive measures on the protestors.
The Testing Agency (NTA) should also be abolished and remedial measures should be taken to address the issue of unemployment, he said. He demanded immediate measures to save the life of activist Sonam Wangchuk and called for sustained efforts and protests to highlight their demands. Office-bearers of both organisations, and Gangubai Kokare, Devamma Devatkal, Yallappa Dore, Pratap Singh Jadhav and others led the protest.
