(IMAGE: ANI) The Delhi High Court on Tuesday permitted the immediate transfer of activist Sonam Wangchuk from Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, observing that he should be shifted to the medical facility of his choice while remaining under expert care. Wangchuk has been on an indefinite fast since June 28 over alleged examination irregularities. The order came on an appeal filed by his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, challenging a single-judge order passed on Sunday that had declined to interfere with his treatment at the central government-run hospital.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia directed the director of Medanta Hospital to constitute a team of specialists with the requisite expertise to continuously monitor Wangchuk’s condition. The court said treatment should be administered strictly in accordance with accepted medical norms and protocols, “to which husband of the appellant shall abide". Emphasising Wangchuk’s rights under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution, the bench held that he ought to be shifted to Medanta, the hospital of his choice. It also directed that Angmo be allowed to meet her husband whenever she wished. “We are concerned with (Wangchuk’s) fundamental rights. Nothing to do with all that is going on," the bench observed while disposing of the matter. Why Medanta? The court’s order has once again turned the spotlight on Medanta, the Gurugram-based multi-super-speciality hospital that has, over the past decade and a half, become one of the country’s most sought-after tertiary care centres for complex medical cases. Founded by eminent cardiac surgeon Dr Naresh Trehan, the hospital has treated several high-profile political leaders and public figures over the years.
Among the most prominent names are Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was admitted to Medanta after testing positive for COVID-19 in August 2020; former Prime Minister I K Gujral, who died at the hospital in 2012 following a prolonged illness; Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, who spent his final days there before passing away in October 2022; and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, who has been admitted to the hospital on multiple occasions for treatment and routine medical evaluation. With the Delhi High Court directing Wangchuk’s transfer from Safdarjung Hospital, the activist becomes the latest high-profile public figure to receive treatment at the Gurugram facility.
