India Today is at Shambhu border, where Haryana Police personnel in anti-riot gear have set up barricades, concrete blocks and chains, with water cannons and additional buses carrying forces in place. Farmers are gathering for their July 21 march towards Delhi and a protest at Kisan Ghat against the India-US free trade deal. The farmers say higher subsidies available to farmers in the United States would leave small and marginal Indian farmers unable to compete.
They also fear genetically modified products entering the Indian market could affect domestic farm produce. Both sides of the road have been barricaded, making movement towards Delhi appear unlikely from this route. The restrictions are also causing inconvenience to the public, with a patient shown unable to pass. The report recalls an earlier confrontation at the border involving tear gas and a lathi charge, and the Punjab government's removal of protesting farmers in March 2025.
