India has strongly protested the deadly attack on merchant vessel MV Golden Leo near Ukraine’s Odesa port. Four Indian crew members were killed and one critically injured when the ship came under fire while departing. Of the 17 crew, five were Indians. The Ministry of External Affairs summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires and lodged a formal protest, condemning attacks on commercial shipping and civilian seafarers.
India emphasised the importance of freedom of navigation in international waters. A response from the Russian side is awaited as the nation mourns its brave merchant navy personnel.
