(Representational) A court in Nashik granted bail to Danish Shaikh, one of the key accused in the alleged religious conversion case linked to a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)-associated BPO unit in the city. Danish Shaikh had been named as one of the primary accused in the case, which came to light after multiple women employees alleged sexual harassment, sexual assault and coercion to convert to another religion by colleagues and supervisors. Police subsequently registered multiple FIRs and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations.

The latest order comes nearly two weeks after a Nashik court granted bail to co-accused Nida Khan and Tausif Attar while rejecting Danish Shaikh’s bail plea at the time. Danish Shaikh was accused of attempting to influence the religious beliefs of a complainant. The prosecution had earlier alleged that he provided the woman with Islamic religious literature and a burqa with the intention of encouraging religious conversion. Prosecutors also claimed that the accused attempted to convert the complainant despite knowing she belonged to a Scheduled Caste community. Police had opposed Danish Shaikh’s earlier bail application, arguing that evidence collected during the investigation pointed to religious coercion and sexual exploitation. However, the Nashik District and Sessions Court has now granted him bail. The detailed reasoning behind the order was not immediately available.

The case has been under investigation since March and April, when complaints from women employees at a TCS-linked BPO unit in Nashik led to the registration of multiple cases at the Deolali Camp Police Station. Nida Khan, another accused in the case, was granted bail earlier this month after spending nearly two months in judicial custody. Investigators have alleged that Nida Khan played a role in the religious conversion aspect of the case and had shared religious material with one of the complainants. Nida Khan has denied the allegations. TCS had earlier suspended employees named in the case and launched an internal inquiry, stating that it follows a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct and is cooperating with law enforcement authorities.
