The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall over the next two days. It has issued a yellow alert for the city, indicating the possibility of heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms at isolated places."During morning - Moderate to Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & gusty winds(40-50kmph), During forenoon - Moderate to Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & gusty winds(40-50kmph), During afternoon - Moderate to Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & gusty winds(40-50kmph), During evening - Very Light to Light Rainfall, Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & gusty winds(30-40kmph)," the IMD's bulletin read.According to the weather department, Delhi is likely to witness generally cloudy sky for Tuesday with one or two spells of light to moderate rain at most places, while isolated areas may receive heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph, with gusts up to 50 kmph, especially during the early morning to noon hours. Another spell of very light to light rain is likely later in the day.“The monsoon trough, which was towards the foothills, was inactive for the past seven to 10 days. However, the trough has been activated due to moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal.
The Monsoon trough passes through Sri Ganganagar, Rohtak, Delhi, Hardoi, Varanasi, Daltonganj, Purulia and Digha Monday,” IMD scientist Krishna Mishra told TOI.“In Delhi, intense showers are likely Tuesday while subdued rain activity is predicted from Thursday. A stronger western disturbance is needed in the winter season for intense rain, but a moderate western disturbance can cause heavy rain in the monsoon season after its interaction with the monsoon trough,” said Mishra. The maximum temperatures are expected to remain subdued due to cloud cover and continuous rainfall activity. Safdarjung, the city's base weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 31.6 degrees Celsius on Monday, a drop of 6.7 degrees compared to Sunday. The rainfall is expected to keep daytime temperatures below normal, although humidity levels are likely to remain high. The country has been witnessing what meteorologists describe as a "break monsoon" phase, a recurring phenomenon during which the monsoon trough shifts northwards, significantly reducing rainfall over Central India and adjoining plains.According to IMD data, the country has so far received 244.6 mm of rainfall against the normal average of 323.1 mm, resulting in an overall rainfall deficit of 24 per cent.On July 21 and 22, Noida residents can expect the wettest period of the week, with heavy rain possible, thunderstorms, and lightning.
