The renewed bombings followed the death of another American service member in Iranian attacks on US facilities in Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain, bringing the total number of military fatalities to 17. The fresh wave of attack also unfolded after President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Iran over strikes killing American troops. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Every time Iran kills an American Soldier they will pay for that killing many times over!" According to the US CENTCOM, the strikes targeted “Iranian military command centers, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and air defense systems to degrade Iran’s ability to continue attacking commercial vessels flowing through the Strait of Hormuz." “Since early May, CENTCOM forces have helped facilitate the transit of approximately 900 commercial vessels and 450 million barrels of crude oil", it said.

However, the preliminary Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the US and Iran –– aimed at ending the conflict in West Asia and reopening the Strait of Hormuz –– collapsed last month, dampening hopes for restoration of peace in the region.
