In her Mother's Day message this year, as she was expecting Alec, she issued a profound yet simple statement that summarized what becoming a mother meant to Vance.The Vances are now parents to four children:Usha Vance has spoken extensively about motherhood, about embracing it for the 4th time after the Vances announced the pregnancy.“People have asked me if we’re going to have a fourth baby, and I’ve never closed the door on that. I grew up in a family of two, and I thought that was a great number. And then I had two kids, and I thought — I didn’t feel quite done, right? So I really wanted to have a third child," Usha Vance said in an NBC interview.“We have our daughter, who’s amazing, and it was great.
And so I just wasn’t sure. But as time passed, I realized that I was feeling more and more, kind of, excited about that possibility. And so if there was a chance, I should take it. I knew that I’d be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew that I’d be happy if we had four. And so here we are.”On another occasion, Usha Vance spoke about being a working mom earlier and now being the Second Lady and said: “The balancing act today is sometimes easier than it was when I was working full-time in the private sector because I have more control over my schedule and do not feel pulled in as many directions. That said, raising children in the public eye poses new challenges.
While I certainly miss working, I am grateful that I have the time to ensure that our home life is as normal and stable as possible.First-generation American Usha Vance was born to immigrant parents in San Diego, California. Her father is a retired mechanical engineer who went on to become a lecturer at San Diego State University, while her mother is the provost of the University of California San Diego's Sixth College and has a background in marine molecular biology.
