Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Monday conducted a surprise inspection of a bio-CNG plant in Chennai's Chetpet area and directed officials to strengthen scientific waste management practices across the state. During the visit, Vijay reviewed the functioning of the facility, which processes around 100 tonnes of food and vegetable waste every day under a public-private partnership model.

Read Full Story The Chief Minister instructed officials to ensure source-level segregation of waste from households and emphasised the need to scientifically process biodegradable waste into bio-CNG. He also directed that non-biodegradable waste be utilised for road construction and in the cement industry wherever feasible.
Vijay stressed that Tamil Nadu should move towards comprehensive scientific waste management within a fixed timeframe and asked officials to replicate similar waste-processing projects in urban local bodies across the state. According to an official release, the Greater Chennai Corporation collects around 6,150 metric tonnes of waste every day. Of this, nearly 3,200 metric tonnes comprise biodegradable waste, while about 2,950 metric tonnes consists of non-biodegradable waste and roadside soil particles.
The inspection came as the Vijay-led government seeks to improve waste segregation, recycling and sustainable disposal practices while reducing the volume of garbage sent to landfills. Ends (with inputs from PTI)
