Delhi Police said over 118 personnel, including senior officers, were injured as the CJP protest turned violent in New Delhi. More than 118 police personnel, including senior officers such as the Special Commissioner of Police and Joint Commissioner of Police, were injured during the CJP protest in New Delhi on Monday, according to Delhi Police. The police said that the protest turned “unruly, aggressive and violent", with demonstrators attacking personnel, attempting to breach barricades and vandalising government property. Around 60 protesters were also reported to have been injured during the clashes. Police say protesters ignored warnings In a statement, Delhi Police said the protesters refused to disperse despite repeated warnings and lawful directions. It said that the protesters deliberately violated prohibitory orders that were in force in the New Delhi area.
According to the police, protesters attacked police personnel with stones and other objects, tried to break through police barricades and vandalised police as well as other government vehicles. The statement said public property was also damaged during the violence. Delhi Police said the large-scale violence posed a serious threat to public order, security arrangements and the safety of police personnel deployed on duty. Joint Commissioner of Police (Joint CP) of the Central Range, Madhur Verma, said, “There was an unlawful assembly that had to be dealt with; there were some incidents of stone-pelting, and the Delhi Police have detained some protesters. Appropriate action is being taken." Delhi CP Anurag Kumar also visited the hospital and met with the injured police personnel. Senior officers, women personnel among injured The police said more than 118 personnel sustained injuries during the clashes. Those injured included officers holding the ranks of Special Commissioner of Police, Joint Commissioner of Police, Additional Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police and Assistant Commissioner of Police.
Several women police personnel were also among those injured, the statement said. The police added that around 60 protesters also suffered injuries during the scuffle. The medico-legal examination (MLC) of the remaining injured police personnel is currently underway. Government vehicles damaged, protesters detained Delhi Police said the violence caused extensive damage to public property. Around 15 to 20 government vehicles, along with other government property, were vandalised during the incident. It further said around 70 protesters had been detained following the clashes. Appropriate legal action has been initiated, and an FIR is being registered under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other applicable laws. According to the police, the case includes charges related to rioting, assault on public servants, damage to public property and other offences allegedly committed during the protest. Reiterating its stand, Delhi Police said it remains committed to maintaining public order and ensuring the safety and security of citizens. It added that strict action would be taken against all those found involved in unlawful and violent activities in accordance with the law.
