Baichung Bhutia assessed Spain’s 1-0 World Cup final victory over Argentina and said, "Spain deserved to win this tournament." He credited Spain’s title to collective play rather than dependence on one star, pointing to ball retention, passing options across defence, midfield and attack, and pressure after losing possession. Bhutia said Spain’s structure restricted opponents, noting the team conceded one goal and faced only 10 shots on target during the tournament.
He highlighted Argentina’s failure to register a shot on target across 120 minutes of the final. On Lionel Messi, Bhutia said the forward’s performances had carried Argentina to the final, but Spain’s team game proved difficult to overcome. He added that Messi’s tears suggested this could be his last World Cup and possibly the end of his international career, while recalling his influence on children taking up football.
