The incident took place in Adapur village in Harihar taluk and came to light late on Sunday night. Police have registered an FIR against the brothers for digging up the body without taking the required permission from the authorities. According to the police, 58-year-old Eeramma was found hanging at her home on April 29. A preliminary post-mortem at Malebennur Hospital reportedly concluded that she had died by suicide. The family then performed her last rites. However, her sons, Manjunath and Venkatesh, did not accept the findings. They claimed their mother was involved in a dispute with several relatives over the construction of a box drain. They alleged that she was attacked and killed before her death was made to look like a suicide.
The brothers accused around 10 to 11 people, including Kariyappa, Bhadra and Shakunthala, of being involved in the alleged murder. They said the injury marks on Eeramma’s body raised doubts about the suicide theory. They also claimed they had repeatedly asked the Malebennur Police to reopen the case and conduct a second post-mortem. “We have several unanswered questions about our mother’s death. If she had died by hanging, there should not have been injuries on her body. We believe only a fresh medical examination can reveal the truth," the brothers told reporters. The brothers also alleged that the first post-mortem was carried out in a hurry and that the police did not properly investigate their complaint. Manjunath had earlier filed a complaint against 11 people, alleging foul play in his mother’s death. Hoping to get another medical examination, the brothers allegedly dug up their mother’s body late on Sunday night. They reportedly did so after dark because they feared they would be stopped during the day. They wrapped the decomposed body in a bedsheet and rode towards Davangere District Hospital on a motorcycle to seek a second post-mortem. The incident came to light after their motorcycle reportedly lost balance near Shamanur Road on the outskirts of Davangere around midnight. People who stopped to help were shocked to find that the bundle being carried on the bike contained a human body.
