Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday directed officials to draw up and implement an effective action plan for the preservation and promotion of the Marathi language. He also called for greater transparency, continuity and efficiency in the functioning of the State Marathi Development Institute. At a meeting of the institute's governing council, Fadnavis asked officials to prepare an annual schedule of all statutory meetings in advance so that its activities could be implemented on time. According to an official release, he also congratulated the institute for clearing its long-pending statutory and administrative backlog, saying this had strengthened its institutional framework.
Read Full Story Fadnavis said the focus should now move to concrete policies for the promotion, research and preservation of Marathi. He also assured that pending issues concerning the institute's employees would be resolved. During the meeting, members suggested expanding initiatives such as "Book Village" and "Library in a Box" to tribal and border areas. They also proposed setting up a theatre complex in Gadchiroli-Vadsa to preserve the Zhadiboli dialect and the theatre tradition of eastern Vidarbha, and promoting folk art forms such as Bharud, Gondhal and Powada.
The members also called for encouragement for children's literature and libraries. The chief minister also reviewed the digitisation of around 1.5 million historical Modi script documents in Thanjavur and discussed speeding up the proposed Global Marathi Centre in London named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Marathi Language Minister Uday Samant said the government had begun the process of setting up 75 international Brihan Maharashtra forums to promote Marathi globally. He said a Kusumagraj Chair had been established at Jawaharlal Nehru University and a postgraduate course on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's guerrilla warfare had been introduced.
Samant also announced the formation of a translation committee in the name of Yashwantrao Chavan to translate quality literature from Indian and international languages into Marathi. The meeting focused on improving the institute's functioning, expanding language and cultural initiatives, and pushing forward projects aimed at preserving, researching and promoting Marathi in India and abroad.
