Pic/PTI An attack on Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee during a visit to South 24 Parganas has triggered a fresh political controversy, with TMC chairperson Mamata Banerjee alleging that hospitals were being pressured not to admit him for treatment. Abhishek Banerjee, one of the party’s most prominent leaders, was assaulted by a mob in Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas, where he had gone to meet victims of post-election violence. TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party for the attack. The ruling party, however, denied the allegation. What Mamata said? Speaking about the incident, Mamata Banerjee alleged that authorities were attempting to prevent Abhishek Banerjee from receiving medical treatment. “Those who are in power are threatening all the hospitals and the maximum authorities not to admit Abhishek Banerjee because they don’t want him to be treated," she said, hitting out at the new BJP government in Bengal. She further claimed that hospital administrators and doctors were facing pressure. “When I was sitting with the hospital administrator, he told me that he was getting threat calls from the police. Doctors are sad, but they are pressured," Mamata Banerjee said. Rahul Gandhi reaches out Mamata Banerjee also said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had contacted her following the incident. According to her, Rahul Gandhi expressed concern and offered assistance if required. “Rahul Gandhi called me and told me if anything is needed, I can tell him, and he can take Abhishek Banerjee to Hyderabad or anywhere else for the treatment," she said. The remarks came amid growing political reactions to the attack and the subsequent medical examination of the TMC leader. What medical note says about Abhishek Banerjee’s injuries? Meanwhile, a medical note issued by Belle Vue Clinic stated that Abhishek Banerjee, 38, was examined on May 30, 2026. According to the note, doctors found no serious physical injury apart from a bruise on his chest. The report stated that he was fully conscious, oriented and able to communicate normally at the time of examination. Doctors concluded that hospital admission was not required. As a precautionary measure, he was administered normal saline, Ringer’s lactate and pain-relief medication. Political row continues The incident has intensified the political confrontation between the TMC and the BJP following the recent change in government in West Bengal. While Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of being responsible for the attack on Abhishek Banerjee, the ruling party rejected the allegation. The controversy has now expanded beyond the assault itself, with allegations over access to medical treatment and claims of pressure on healthcare institutions.
